The Artists’ Way, written by Julia Cameron, is an excellent source of inspiration for those who have the desire to live a more creative life but need to develop the practice. Consider reading this book with another friend or friends who share a similar desire. Several years ago, I had the awesome experience of doing the Artists Way with a group of nine wonderful women. It changed my life.

Painting is truly a wholistic experience involving mind, body and soul. Good basic selfcare can really enhance an artists’ work. I like to begin with three simple concepts: eat well, sleep well and exercise. After a few days of employing the three concepts, there is room for natural alignment to begin. In other words, once the physical self is nurtured, the energy is provided for mental, emotional and spiritual enhancement.

Mentors are a valuable part of your picture. The rich experience of learning from other successful professionals is, I believe, a necessary part of creative growth. I am especially grateful to the individuals who have shared their wisdom and sage advise with me on my artistic journey.

Several artists have asked me to share some of my marketing ideas with them. My strongest selling tool is more of a belief. It goes like this: My focus, is to arrive at a place, to connect with it in a way that I become fully immersed in the scene. That is the only thing I need to think about in that moment. If I can do that successfully, my paintings will find their owners.

Of course, the artist needs to create the venue for the work to be seen. Fortunately, today's artists are surrounded by a multitude of exhibiting opportunities. I find it helpful to establish a fairly accurate schedule at least one year in advance. Once a plan is in place, I can enjoy the freedom of focusing on my work, one painting at a time.

When painting on location, I welcome onlookers and, at certain points in a painting, may take a break to converse with appreciators who have gathered around. I consider that part of the rich plein air experience.

Folks ask, “How can you let go of a painting that you love?" I tell them it is the process that I so love. While creating a painting, I enjoy being at a beautiful place and having moments of deep connection. The finishing touch is placing my painting in the hands of an appreciative buyer, an individual who sees and understands the beauty that served as my inspiration. That understanding is personally satisfying and completes the process.
